Western US

CA, OR, WA, NV, AZ, UT, CO

Most jurisdictions require permits for decks over 200 sq ft or 30" above grade. California has additional seismic requirements for elevated structures.

Midwest

IL, OH, MI, MN, WI, IN, MO

Frost line depths range from 36-48 inches. Footings must extend below frost line. Most areas require permits for attached decks.

Northeast

NY, MA, PA, NJ, CT, ME, NH, VT

Heavy snow loads require stronger framing. Most towns require permits for all decks attached to a house. Historic districts may have additional review.

Southeast

FL, GA, NC, SC, TX, LA, TN

Wind load ratings are critical in hurricane zones. Florida requires specific hurricane tie-downs. Moisture and termite protection important across the region.
